How selling my first Amazon brand paid for my wife's dream home

If you’ve gotten some of my past emails, you may have heard how my wife grew up in the projects and bounced around living with relatives after losing both her parents…

Well, as you can imagine, a ‘home’ was never a very stable place for her growing up.

That’s why she always dreamed of living in a big house that she could make her own. A place to feel secure and stable.

Up until not that long ago, I wasn’t sure that was ever going to happen. I mean, I was a social worker helping at risk-youth with $150,000 in credit card debt.

But as I mentioned before, that all changed when I found the power of selling online and building my own business.

And after years of selling on Amazon, creating multiple 7-figure brands on Amazon (and now an 8-figure brand)…

I was able to sell my first brand in January of 2021.

Which finally made my wife’s dream of owning her big home where she could host family and friends a reality.

The mission to host friends and family accomplished.

Most days I still wake up and find it hard to believe that a few short years ago we were $150k in debt…

Here’s how it all started…

Back in 2014 timeframe, I was ordering a product from China (after connecting on Alibaba) and sharing the buy box with the manufacturer. We were both selling the manufacturer’s brand on the same listing.

But, after some time, this manufacturer told me that they didn’t want to share the buy box anymore. It was a very frustrating and sad day for me because in my head I was losing out on a big revenue generator.

I tried everything to persuade the manufacturer to continue with our partnership. I even asked an Amazon friend to meet with the supplier in Los Angeles when he was visiting the USA to try to convince him to keep letting me sell his brand on Amazon.

Unfortunately, the seller didn’t know how to speak Chinese, and the manufacturer owner didn’t know how to speak in English and there was no translator… so you can imagine how that dinner went.

It was my last attempt to persuade the owner, and it failed.

How this major ‘setback’ changed my whole world:

I was devastated by this setback of not being able to sell my best product anymore.

Eventually, the owner of the brand reached out and offered to ‘private label’ his branded products to me. I half-heartedly agreed to give it a shot.

This was my first attempt at creating my own brand. Yet, it’s funny how in those situations where you get a no, and you feel like everything’s falling apart, that you realize there may be a different path that you should take. When you take the alternative route, you end up with something completely different and often much better than what you thought you originally wanted.

When I look back at those moments now, I felt that those hardships and defeats were the best things that ever happened to me.

And I have to be honest with you.

I was in a scary situation back then because I left a full-time job that I loved to try my luck in the eCommerce space. Then, when I started to make good money…


Suddenly, I had lost my partnership and felt like I was drowning. A lot of thoughts were racing through my mind, and I didn’t know what to tell to Deanna at that moment.

And that was the reason why I was forced to create my own brand.

Sometimes in life you may feel like you have made a decision, but then some outside forces will come along and force you to make a change which you were not prepared to make. You may feel stressed, scared, and worried about what will happen. But eventually, you will see that the forced change was actually a blessing in disguise. That’s what happened to me. I was a mere arbitrage seller, buying and flipping products on Amazon when I was ‘forced’ to start building my own brand.

But now, all those moments were really worth it.

Then, the opportunity to sign up for the Black Friday list presented itself. Cleopatra quickly signed up for this list, because she knew she didn’t know enough about selling in Q4.

Cleopatra knew that being part of the Amazon Seller Tribe would help her exponentially, and it did. The Q4 BOLOs and the Black Friday leads were out of this world. She admitted that she had never seen sales numbers like that in her Amazon seller account. From that point, she knew she would never leave Tribe.
