Reverse Sourcing Product Finds on Amazon

Did you know that there are tons of websites that can help you connect with manufacturers domestically and internationally? But, the best website that can connect you with manufacturers all over the world is Alibaba.com. There were only a few major players that allowed you to connect with manufacturers. Then Alibaba came along. Now, this is the primary website used to connect manufacturers in different parts of the world.

How do we use Alibaba to find potential products?

If you have read our previous releases, we have discussed how you can find potential products to sell on Amazon. But one method that isn’t discussed as much, is going to Alibaba.com to see what manufacturers are advertising as their hot/new products. This is a really good way to find what new products are coming out.

In the past, the only way to do this was by going to the Canton fair in China. It is where many manufacturers would bring out their top new products.

And to be honest, Asia is ahead of the USA in terms of manufacturing these innovative new products. The only downside is you need to be in China to go to the Canton Fair.

While not the same as being in China, using Alibaba to identify new products is a pretty good alternative. To be clear, I am not talking about identifying a product opportunity on Amazon and then going to Alibaba to source it (which is what is usually talked about). I’m talking about starting with Alibaba to get ideas.

The great thing about Alibaba is that you’re able to search by category for these various new products or you can use the search bar to start with some generalized category terms.

Now, Nate and I will usually also go to Etsy or Pinterest to get ideas for these potential products that we’re looking for. Oftentimes, we are able to find creative variations that give us ideas for new products.


For New Sellers:

If you’re a new seller and you’re looking for a product to sell, the home page of Alibaba.com will usually be spammed with hyper-competitive products. So I recommend definitely niching down by category and looking for more unique opportunities.

For existing sellers:

I recommend that you check Alibaba frequently even if you already have an established brand. This is a great way to keep on top of trending products in your niche. Follow your manufacturers, similar manufacturers and related products so that you can see when new interesting things pop up.

AMAZON SELLER FORUM TRENDS

Amazon Surcharge Starting April 28, 2022

One of the biggest changes happening this month is the surcharge in Amazon’s service due to increase in fuel and inflation.

Starting April 28, 2022, a 5% fuel and inflation surcharge will be applied to US FBA fulfillment fees. The surcharge will apply to all product types, such as non-apparel, apparel, dangerous goods, and Small and Light items. The surcharge will apply to all units shipped from fulfillment centers starting April 28. The surcharge is subject to change.

Now, to be clear, this is a 5% increase on existing FBA fulfillment fees. That means that it is not equivalent to a 5% decrease in profitability.

However, there have already been several fee increases this year, so you definitely should be paying close attention to your margins, running your numbers and making adjustments to your buying criteria accordingly.
